Ancient Persian Achaemenid bas relief sculpture panel showing a lion attacking a bull, 500-400 BC reign Darius I, Apadana at Persepolis. 19th century cast taken from the Palace of Darius in Persepolis Iran. British Museum. The scene is repeated on other reliefs at Persepolis and may represent a contest between good and evil: the bull representing the evil spirit Ahriman; the lion representing the god Aura Mazda of the Zoroastrian religion. Scholars have also interpreted the depictions as the triumph of the king over his rebels or as having astrological significance.
