The map is bordered by numerous vignettes featuring iconic structures and modes of transport, offering a nostalgic and artistic representation of global exploration and wonder.

A hand-drawn map giving a detailed picture of Canton at the end of the Second Opium War. The old city is beautifully rendered with the great palaces, pagodas and the city's many gates all marked. To the north of the city walls lie the imposing hill forts, and to the south is the new city which, before the outbreak of hostilities, housed the residence of the Governor Ye Mingchen. Beyond the city walls to the right are depicted the north and east parade grounds.

RM3E9K64N–Guilielmus Hesius (1601–1690) was a Jesuit polymath, renowned for his work in architecture, mathematics, astronomy, poetry, and the arts. In 1624, he wrote and illustrated *Emblemata sacra de fide, spe, charitate*, a collection of symbolic emblems. This work combines spiritual poetry, allegorical images, and moral teachings. Emblematic literature was a significant cultural and intellectual genre in the 17th century, and Hesius’s work was printed in 1636.
