Google have released a list of the most searched for topics over the last 12 months. There aren’t many suprises although we had no idea the Eurovision Song Contest was still such a big deal (see no.7). Take a look and let us know if there’s anything you’re surprised to see, or not see? According to the guys at this is the first year in a while where an Apple product didn’t make the cut, and a mobile app did.
1. Robin Williams
This incredible US actor passed away on August 11th 2014. His hit movies include Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, Hook and the unforgettable Mrs Doubtfire.

2. World Cup
The 2014 World Cup was held in Brazil there were 171 goals scored throughout the tournament, making it the joint highest ever.

3. Ebola
2014 saw the first Ebola outbreak to reach epidemic proportions and it continues to spread across several West African countries at an alarming rate.

4. Malaysia Airlines
Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) was an international passenger flight that disappeared on Saturday, 8 March 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The aircraft was carrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 15 nations.

5. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
The ALS challenge went viral on social media in 2014. It involves pouring a bucket of ice water over your head, filming it and posting it on social media then nominating your friends to do it too. The aim is to encourage donations to the ALS charity, or another charity of your choice.

6. Flappy Bird
Flappy Bird is a mobile game, developed by Vietnam-based developer Dong Nguyen. It was released in 2013 but it received a sudden rise in popularity in early 2014.

7. Conchita Wurst
Conchita Wurst, is an Austrian singer and drag queen who rose to fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 with the song Rise Like a Phoenix.

8. ISIS
ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) has become one of the main jihadist groups fighting government forces in Syria and Iraq and has been across our news screens throughout 2014.

9. Frozen
Frozen is the must see Disney film of 2014 and has become the 5th highest grossing film in history after making over $1 billion at the box office. The song ‘Let it go’ has helped make this film a worldwide phenomenon.

10. Sochi Olympics
The 2014 Winter Olympics were held in Sochi, Russia in February last year and are estimated to be the most expensive ever at $50 billion. They were one of the most controversial Olympic Games in recent history because of protests over Russia’s political alignments.
