This epic medieval war film from 1995, directed by and starring Mel Gibson, was set in Scotland but controversially a lot of the film was made in Ireland. There were some parts of the film set that couldn’t be faked though, and the sweeping mountain scenes were shot in the Highlands of Scotland, around Loch Leven and Glen Coe.

12. The Kings Speech
In this sweet and funny Oscar nominated film starring Colin Firth, one of the biggest location challenges was finding somewhere to film the coronation scenes. In reality all coronations take place at Westminster Abbey, which unfortunately is not available as a film location. In the end the coronation rehearsal was filmed in Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire.

16. The Beach
We all know this one is set on a beach, but where is it? The main beach from the film is in Phi Phi Leh Island, near Phuket, Thailand. If you’re planning a trip there, you should know that the palms were planted by the film crew to create a ‘more perfect’ location, so it might not be quite what you expect!

19. Harry Potter

Like most movies some of the scenes in Harry Potter are shot in a studio, but many are shot on location. Some of the best known scenes were shot in the Oxford University buildings, and there are some great Harry Potter tours available around the city. However you decide to explore the city, make sure you look out for the vaulted ceiling and staircase in the Christchurch college buildings.
