Photography trends inspired by the world of entertainment

In this day and age with the majority of us owning a device that allows us to catch our favourite tv shows or films on the commute to work or waiting in the dentist surgery, there’s no escaping the world of entertainment. It’s no surprise then that there are many trends that cross over from this world into stock photography.

Here we take a look at how current stock photography styles are harnessing the trends set by movies and TV shows.

Fantasy

Fantasy is a growing trend within stock photography this year. Think mythical creatures, fairy tale landscapes and fantasy pop culture. , the medieval fantasy series based on George R.R. Martin’s book series “A Song of Ice and Fire”, has been a massive contributing factor in the spike in popularity of all things mythical in recent years. From white walkers and dragons to a red priestess with magical powers it’s safe to say that GoT is leading the game within this genre of entertainment and it was only a matter of time before this started to creep into photography.

Off The Beaten Track Travel

In recent years travel photography has developed with shots of famous landmarks are being over taken by candid more ‘off the beaten track’ imagery, showing the authenticity of a destination. A film being released this year that I am beyond excited for that really captures this trend is . The film’s set on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi, but this time around was actually filmed in Vis, Croatia. describes Vis as the most mysterious of all the Croatian islands making it a great place to capture authentic travel imagery.

History and Memory

Historic and archival images have always been popular with customers but more recently there has been a renewed interest in history as inspiration for modern day art and photography. A tv show that’s doing just that and taking inspiration from history is  A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England that follows the lives of the Shelby family who run an underground bookies in the city. Inspired by the real-life Brummie gangsters who ran English racetracks in the early 1900s, since it first aired in 2013 the show has slowly grown in popularity. Gender Fluidity

As we discussed in a recent blog, societies understanding of identity and gender is changing with  identifying as transgender or gender non-conforming. Up-coming film,Ìý (due to be released this summer), follows a Brooklyn couple and their 4 year old sons’ gender-nonconforming play. This theme has slowly started to make it’s way into stock photography but we still have a way to go and we’re in need of more images representing LGBTQ and gender neutral individuals.
