Escape reality for a couple of minutes, as we travel around the world visiting some of the eye catching carnivals that take place every year. We’ve explored our image collection to find some of the most exciting and colourful images that showcase the people, costumes and celebrations.

1. Día de Muertos, Mexico
Translated as ‘Day of the Dead’, this is one of the biggest festivals in Mexico. It’s a celebration of loved ones who have died.

2. Venice Carnival
Famous for its elaborate masks, Venice carnival takes place every year during carnival season – the run up to lent.

3. Mardi Gras – New Orleans
The annual Mardi Gras carnival is also held in the run up to lent with an eye catching parade every day.

4. Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Held during the traditional carnival season, Tenerife carnival involves fancy dress, floats and thousands of people having a good time in the street.

5. Cologne Carnival
This carnival starts in November and goes all the way through to February – that’s a lot of carnival! The whole of the downtown area  is full of people wearing breath-taking costumes watching live music.

6. Notting Hill Carnival
The Notting Hill Carnival takes place every August and attracts around one million people, making it one of the largest street festivals in the world.

7. Festa Major de Sant Roc – Barcelona
Held in August, the Sant Roc festival is the oldest in Barcelona. One of the highlights is the “la cucanya” contest, which involves walking over a greasy pole!

8. Rio Carnival, Brazil
The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the biggest carnival in the world, with over two million people visiting every day.

9. La Tomatina, Spain
La Tomatina is a Spanish festival which involves throwing tomatoes at each other, for fun.
