CG: How long have you been a photographer and what made you want to get into photography?
IO: I started photography 20 years ago. I took it very seriously from the beginning, but it doesn鈥檛 mean my photography was that serious in the beginning. Others helped me getting into photography. When coming back from trips away I had so much to tell. Many people said I should combine these stories with photography. That鈥檚 how it started.鈦
CG: What motivates you to keep on making images creative?
IO: I still believe in showing the beauty of our earth and how that can create a change for good!鈦
CG: Where is your favourite location to shoot? And how much preparation does it take?
IO: I am focused on Iceland right now. The plan is to cover this amazing country. I did Australia before. Every trip I do is well prepared as I like to get most out of the time I have. Of course it is all theory and plans are to be changed.
CG: Tell us the story behind your most difficult shot?
IO: I visited Uluru (Australia) many times and always had a dream of seeing this majestic rock in rain one day 鈥 it rarely happens. Well, it happened on a clear October day when a storm came in from the west. It happened so quickly. It came in, brought heavy rain, thunder and lightning within minutes.
Nearly all visitors fled the storm and I was looking for a good spot to take some images of this amazing display. The earth was shaking in the thunder and for a second I wondered if it鈥檚 a good idea to stay there. But that thought disappeared immediately. The rain stopped, while the storm moved over Uluru. I cannot really tell how long it took to come and go, but it was very quick.
Seeing the images later made me think how important it was to know exactly what to do to get what I want. There was no time for trial and error. I won鈥檛 forget these couple of minutes I spent at Uluru that afternoon in October鈦.
CG: What advice would you give to a fellow photographer who is just starting out?鈦
IO: Choose a topic to focus on, a topic your name might be connected with. Focusing on a topic makes it easier to get better. It helped me a lot that my focus was on Australia for a long time, showcasing Australia鈥檚 landscapes and its wildlife. After some years customers approached me when looking for an Australian portfolio. It opened many doors for me.
