It’s that time of year again when Manhattan gets to look even more cool聽than usual, that’s right, it’s Manhattanhenge time. With only two opportunities to shoot it this year, if you’re in NYC it’s time to pick up your cameras and hope for clear skies as the streets become drenched in gorgeous, golden sunset light.
Cool. What’s Manhattanhenge?
Manhattanhenge is when the sun lines up perfectly with the city’s street grid creating a beautiful and dramatic sunset as you look from the East to the West.
, tonight at around 8:12pm EST you’ll get the “half sun on the grid” and tomorrow at the same time it’ll be the “full sun on the grid”. Both look awesome, but the full sun probably pips it as, well, it’s the whole sun rather than half.
Instagram is set to go into virtual meltdown once again as ‘grammers fight for the best spots on the street in order to get the most likes for their #manhattanhenge pics and who can blame them with views like this?
Where is the best place to see it?
Depends on the view you want and whether or not you’re willing to fight the crowds – make sure you get your spot nice and early (unless it’s in the middle of the street). have collated a load of good advice for where to go and聽聽reckon you should go as far east in Manhattan as you can without losing view of New Jersey. Good spots are cross streets like 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd and 57th. remind us that聽the Chrysler building on 42nd and the Empire State Building on 34th are also ideal vantage points.
The next opportunity to view the phenomenon will be July 12th and 13th so if you can’t make it this weekend, or if clouds spoil the party, you at least won’t have to wait聽迟辞辞听long before it comes round again.
