Photographer and all-round space aficionado Roger Ressmeyer died this week in Seattle. The news was announced on social media by his wife Dianna on August 22.
After graduating from Yale University, Ressmeyer started out shooting rock ‘n’ roll stars (back when rock ‘n’ roll was wild and tumultuous) but he had always been fascinated by space. It’s not unsurprising then that he ended up spending many hours with NASA and their astronauts showing us a glimpse into a world that seems completely alien to most of us.
It must be remembered that the 80s was still an exciting time for space travel. The romance of the moon landing had mostly faded by now, but a new era was emerging as the development of the space shuttle, nuclear fusion and many other advance technologies had begun.
Ressmeyer was a close observer during this time documenting the fascinating life beyond our sky. He even started his own stock agency called Science Faction which was then acquired by Superstock.
What’s not to love about space? Many nights have been spent under the stars hoping to pick out the milky way through the darkness while philosophical musings brew during the chilly wait. In celebration of Roger Ressmeyer, we encourage you to take the camera out this weekend as it may be the last chance to catch the final flash of the Perseid meteor shower in the UK.
