Internet security. Perhaps not the most glamorous聽(or even interesting)聽of blog topics but one of the most important. I’d love to tell you about all the impressive internet security we have in place behind the scenes here at 17吃瓜在线 but I’m sworn to secrecy by our I.T department for obvious reasons. We take the security of our users very seriously and 聽have various systems and safeguards in place to make sure our security stays as robust as possible for our users, but that doesn’t mean we can afford to get complacent, and some of the responsibility also rests with you.
Now I’m no expert in this field, but I know a man who is. Nick Hollingshead is our IT Services Manager and he has some thoughts and recommendations on how to make sure your online security with 17吃瓜在线 remains as safe as can be:
- Don鈥檛 use the same password for more than one site
Although your personal information is still important, this is especially true for sites with bank or payment details. Say someone breaks into a site you use, such as , , , or , and steals a list of email addresses and passwords? Those credentials can be used to access other sites where the same details have been used so make sure you have different details for each site where possible.
- Use longer and more complex passwords or phrases
All the possible 8 character passwords can be attempted in a matter of days, although hopefully most websites you use won鈥檛 allow that to happen. With this in mind you鈥檒l want to do better than Spoon#%5.
- Use a password manager
If you have lots of long and complex passwords how can you remember them? You get some software to remember them for you. This does mean you have to trust the password manager and remember one very secure password or passphrase to unlock it. Suggestions based on friends and colleagues experience are , , and .
- Be suspicious
When online, keep your wits about you. Don鈥檛 click on random emails or links. If you want to go to a website and put in important details then type the website address into your address bar rather than following a link from an unknown source.
