360° images

One key knock-on effect of advances like this is the changing expectations of audiences when it comes to their experience of a product. If you can pop on a VR headset and experience a three-dimensional world from your sofa, then a flat, two-dimensional photo just won’t cut it.

Enter the 360-degree image. It’s accessible to every kind of photographer, with specialist cameras available and dedicated Android and iOs apps for mobile photographers. What’s great is that most social platforms and apps will now accept 360 images just like any other photo.

They offer the viewer a more in-depth and authentic view of the picture they’re looking at. And authenticity is one of 2018’s biggest image trends, so this is a great way to incorporate it into your projects.

Retro and Vintage imagery

There’s just something about a vintage-style photograph; it’s homely, comforting and nothing beats that nostalgic feeling.

From the re-emergence of fashion trends from the ‘90s to the revival of vinyl records, old-school is back. In recent years, the creative industries have seen a whole host of retro trends resurfacing, and photography is no exception.

Shooting on film has surged in popularity among photographers, creating a whole new range of modern-day takes on vintage styles. There’s also been a rise in the range of filters and photo editing tools to help achieve the retro look.

Trends tend to follow a cycle that brings them in and out of fashion. So, with a range of creative industries already boasting old-school looks, it’s no surprise the vintage style is also popular with image buyers. It’s a versatile trend that’s being , blogs and websites with different focuses. There are a range of ways to use this photography style, including adding a rustic feel to home interiors imagery to boosting the romanticism in a wedding photo.

Aerial photography

Cue the drone. This technological advancement made it possible for jaw-dropping, birds-eye views to be captured on camera and made readily available. This one doesn’t take much explanation as to why it’s trending. Aerial shots simply have the ‘wow’ factor in whatever capacity they’re used, as they offerÌýyour audience a glimpse at the world from a unique perspective.

There are loads of ways to use aerial photography, from breathtaking travel imagery to using it as the basis for a topography map. A front-on view of a skyscraper or an image taken from directly above a natural landscape; aerial shots let us see things from an extraordinary viewpoint.

Cinemagraphs

If you’re active on social media, you might have noticed some pretty cool images that appear to be moving. Introducing the cinemagraph; a still image to which a small movement has been added, forming a video clip. It’s a trend that’s always on our radar, and with the increase in quality of mobile cameras there’s now a blurring between traditional and mobile photography. However, the trend right now is all about visual effects apps and what they can add to enhance mobile photography. Initially it was all about ‘the Instagram look’, but as more people turn to mobile photography, there’s been a surge in theÌý increase in the range of styles from a multitude of apps.Ìýis still a popular trend but with apps likeÌýÌýtapping into the retro and vintage vibe and others like showcasing its own unique look and feel, there are some very creative styles topping the trends lists.
