Microbial fermentation. Workers in clean room suits inspecting a microbial fermentation unit. The fermentation unit provides optimal growing conditions for a culture of microorganisms. The unit provides nutrients, removes waste products and maintains an optimal temperature for reproduction. The microorganisms being cultured have usually been genetically modified to produce a product they would not normally make. Such products can include antibodies, human hormones and enzymes. This is a Bioengineering microbial fermentation unit. This inspection is being carried out by employees of the UK's Health Protection Agency.
