Austrian celebration of the traditional summer solstice festival called Sonnwendfeuer on the Nordkette mountain and ridges above Innsbruck in the heart of the Austrian Alps. Sonnwendfeuer is a celebration of either mid-summer or mid-winter. Traditionally bonfires were lit to warn off evil-spirits and today the fires remain a central part of many national festivities. In the Alps this is no different; hundreds of bonfires, torches and beacons are lit along the mountain ridges and slopes creating a fantastic sight. These beacons of light could be seen for miles and miles around. It was a spectacle to see them illuminate and depict the mountains through the night.
